I was lucky to participate in the Lean Learning initiative last week and it was a great learning experience. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical, like I think many of us were, after Week One to see how this initiative was going to involve and impact everyone in the company. I was shocked to see how far the team had come since that first week. As I was walked through all of our walls filled with sticky notes, I could finally see how useful they were and how anyone could walk by them and get an idea or see how something could be changed.
I was able to learn some new tools that will be useful in meetings across the company in the near future, as they allow everyone’s opinion to be heard which might not have happened otherwise. It was really remarkable to see how the whole group could be influenced by just one person’s opinion (which shows how powerful the tools really are).
The other thing that stood out to me was teamwork. We all know that it is one of our core values and we do a great job of demonstrating teamwork in our day to day tasks within our separate departments. What was really cool to see was how we all embraced that value and were able to form and work in groups that we typically do not interact with on a daily basis. By having these varied groups we were able to gain insights on how certain processes impact other parts of the business – resulting in new idea generation and realized potential for process change.
It will be exciting to see how this last week of our Sprint goes and how the boards transform. I am looking forward to sharing our learnings with the whole company and seeing everyone embrace the ideas and tools, and watching the impact on our current processes.
